What are the 12 houses (Bhavas)?

The 12 houses in Vedic astrology represent 12 different domains of life experience. Unlike the 12 zodiac signs (which are fixed divisions of the ecliptic), the 12 houses are divisions of the local sky based on the Earth's rotation — they shift completely depending on where and when you were born. The house that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth becomes your 1st house (Ascendant or Lagna), and all other houses follow in counter-clockwise order.

Kendra, Trikona and Dusthana houses

Houses are classified into groups that define their strength and nature. Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are angular — the four pillars of the chart, strongest for manifesting results. Trikona houses (1, 5, 9) are the most auspicious — representing dharma and fortune. A planet ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona becomes a Yogakaraka — the most beneficial planet in the chart for that Ascendant. Dusthana houses (6, 8, 12) are challenging — associated with obstacles, transformation, and hidden matters. Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) improve over time — malefic planets here actually perform better as life progresses.

How to judge a house's strength

Four factors determine house strength: (1) The sign occupying the house — a sign's natural ruler sitting in the house amplifies it. (2) The house lord's placement — where the ruling planet of the house sits determines the house's general direction. A strong, well-placed house lord in a Kendra or Trikona gives excellent results for that house's matters. (3) Planets occupying the house — natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Moon, Mercury) in a house generally strengthen it; natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun) can damage or intensify it. (4) Aspects on the house — particularly benefic aspects from Jupiter can significantly protect even a challenged house.
