Houses are classified into groups that define their strength and nature. Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are angular — the four pillars of the chart, strongest for manifesting results. A planet ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona becomes a Yogakaraka — the most beneficial planet in the chart for that Ascendant. Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) improve over time — malefic planets here actually perform better as life progresses.
Four factors determine house strength: (1) The sign occupying the house — a sign's natural ruler sitting in the house amplifies it. (2) The house lord's placement — where the ruling planet of the house sits determines the house's general direction. A strong, well-placed house lord in a Kendra or Trikona gives excellent results for that house's matters. (3) Planets occupying the house — natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Moon, Mercury) in a house generally strengthen it; natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun) can damage or intensify it. (4) Aspects on the house — particularly benefic aspects from Jupiter can significantly protect even a challenged house.
