Kundali matching (Kundli Milan) is not just a score out of 36 — it is a multi-layered compatibility assessment that looks at personality, health, prosperity, longevity, and spiritual alignment. Learn what each of the 8 Kootas reveals about a marriage.
✦ Check Kundali Compatibility FreeKundali matching (also called Kundli Milan or Ashtakoota Milan) is the traditional Vedic astrology system for assessing marriage compatibility between two individuals. The primary method compares the birth Nakshatra of both partners across 8 categories (Kootas), assigning points to each. The maximum score is 36 Gunas. A score above 18 is considered acceptable, above 24 is good, and above 28 is excellent for marriage compatibility.
However, experienced astrologers consistently emphasise that the Guna score alone is insufficient — and even high-scoring matches can fail while low-scoring ones can flourish. What matters is a comprehensive assessment that includes Mangal Dosha, Nadi Dosha, the overall strength and compatibility of both charts, and the quality of Venus and Jupiter in each person's horoscope.
| Koota | Max points | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual compatibility and ego matching. Brahmin (highest) to Shudra (service) — partner's Varna should be equal or higher. |
| Vasya | 2 | Mutual attraction and control. Measures who holds natural influence in the relationship. |
| Tara (Dina) | 3 | Birth star compatibility. Counts the nakshatra distance between partners — certain numbers indicate auspicious or inauspicious combinations. |
| Yoni | 4 | Sexual compatibility and physical intimacy. Each nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol; matching animals determine harmony. |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Psychological compatibility. Compares Moon sign lords of both partners — friendly lords indicate mental compatibility. |
| Gana | 6 | Nature and temperament. Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (fierce) — same Gana or compatible combinations work best. |
| Bhakoot (Rashi) | 7 | Prosperity and emotional compatibility. Certain Moon sign combinations (2–12, 9–5, 6–8 counting) are considered highly inauspicious. |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny compatibility. The most heavily weighted Koota. Same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, or Antya) between partners indicates Nadi Dosha — associated with health challenges and difficulty having children. |
Traditional guidelines: below 18 Gunas — match not recommended without detailed chart analysis and exceptions. 18–24 Gunas — acceptable match, proceed with full chart review. 24–32 Gunas — good match. 32–36 Gunas — excellent match. Note that Nadi Dosha (same Nadi) carries heavy weight even in otherwise high-scoring matches and should never be ignored.
Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house (with variations by school). Traditionally, a Manglik (Mars-afflicted) partner should ideally marry another Manglik, as the doshas are said to cancel. However, many classical exceptions apply: Mars in its own sign, in exaltation, or aspected by benefics can significantly reduce Mangal Dosha severity. Our Mangal Dosha calculator provides a complete analysis of exceptions specific to your chart.
The most experienced Vedic astrologers give as much weight to the overall chart compatibility as to the Guna score. Key factors to examine beyond Guna: (1) Venus condition in both charts — Venus signifies love and marital happiness; a weak or severely afflicted Venus in either chart is a concern regardless of Guna score. (2) 7th house and its lord — the marriage house's strength and freedom from severe affliction. (3) Dasha timing — are both partners in marriage-supportive Dashas? (4) Longevity indicators — are the fundamental life-force indicators in both charts strong enough to support a long partnership?
