Rahu is the ascending lunar node — not a physical planet but a mathematical shadow point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. It represents amplification, worldly ambition, obsession and karmic direction toward the unfamiliar. Its sign placement shows the flavor of what the native is driven, sometimes uncomfortably, to pursue.
☊ An honest note on Rahu's dignity: Unlike the seven classical planets, Rahu has no sign rulership, and its exaltation/debilitation signs are genuinely disputed across classical texts — some sources place exaltation in Taurus or Gemini, others differ. Rather than assert a false consensus, this guide focuses on Rahu's behavioral themes by sign rather than claiming fixed dignity.

Reading Rahu properly — sign, house and dispositor together
Rahu's effects genuinely depend more on its house placement and dispositor's strength than sign alone, since Rahu has no natural rulership of its own. In KP specifically, our engine determines what Rahu signifies from its own placement, its dispositor's full signify-list, and its Star Lord — see our full Rahu & Ketu guide for the validated methodology.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Rahu have a ruling sign like other planets?
Rahu (and Ketu) are shadow points, not physical bodies — mathematical intersections of the Moon's orbit with the ecliptic. Classical Vedic astrology never assigned them sign rulership the way it did the seven visible planets, which is also why different texts disagree on their exaltation signs rather than agreeing as they do for the seven classical planets.
Is Rahu always negative?
No — Rahu is a natural malefic, but not inherently harmful. It amplifies whatever house and sign it occupies, which can mean exceptional, if unconventional, success just as easily as difficulty. Its house placement, dispositor's strength, and current Dasha period matter far more than a simple good/bad label.
How long does Rahu stay in one sign?
Rahu moves retrograde through the zodiac, spending roughly 18 months in each sign as part of its 18-year cycle through all 12 signs — which is also why Rahu Mahadasha itself lasts 18 years in the Vimshottari system.
