K.S. Krishnamurti's greatest contribution to astrology was the sub-lord theory. Every previous system of astrology โ Parashari, Jaimini, Western โ asked "which planet is strong or weak?" KP asks a fundamentally different question: "Is the event promised at all?" And the answer comes from the sub-lord of the relevant house cusp.
What is a cusp sub-lord?
Every house in your KP chart has a cusp โ a specific degree of the zodiac where that house begins. That degree falls within a nakshatra (lunar mansion). Each nakshatra is further divided into 9 sub-sections, each governed by a planet. The planet governing the sub-section where your house cusp falls is the sub-lord of that house cusp.
๐ The mathematics: 27 nakshatras ร 9 sub-divisions = 249 unique sub-lord zones, each spanning just 0.25ยฐโ4ยฐ of the zodiac. This makes KP approximately 9 times more precise than a system that only reads at the nakshatra level. The sub-lord changes every 0.25ยฐโ4ยฐ of zodiac โ which is why even a few minutes of birth time can shift predictions dramatically.
How the sub-lord gates events
The sub-lord gates an event by either supporting or blocking it through its natal house connections. If the sub-lord of the 7th house cusp is connected to the 2nd (family), 7th (partnership) and 11th (fulfilment) houses, marriage is promised. If the sub-lord connects to the 1st, 6th or 10th houses instead, marriage is either denied or significantly delayed.
This is revolutionary because it means the dasha period or transit alone cannot deliver an event if the cusp sub-lord does not support it. Conversely, if the sub-lord strongly supports an event, even a relatively weak dasha period can deliver it when the timing aligns.
Sub-lord signifying the house itself
Strongest promise โ the sub-lord fully supports the house's events. Events in this area tend to materialise clearly and completely.
Sub-lord signifying supporting houses
Good promise โ the sub-lord supports related houses. Events occur but may have the flavour of the supporting houses.
Sub-lord signifying neutral houses
Mixed results โ some aspects of the house manifest, others do not. Timing is more variable.
Sub-lord signifying opposing houses
Events denied or delayed โ the sub-lord opposes the house's promise. Specific remedies and timing patience required.

Frequently asked questions
Can the sub-lord change if my birth time is off by a few minutes?
Yes โ this is one of the most important points in KP. The sub-lord of a house cusp changes every 0.25ยฐโ4ยฐ of zodiac, and the ascendant moves at approximately 1ยฐ per 4 minutes. A 15-minute birth time error can shift the ascendant by 4ยฐ, potentially changing multiple house cusp sub-lords. This is why birth time accuracy โ and birth time rectification for those who are uncertain โ is so critical in KP astrology.
How is the sub-lord different from the house lord?
The house lord is the planet that rules the sign on the house cusp. The sub-lord is determined by the exact degree of the cusp, going deeper to the sub-division within the nakshatra. In KP, the sub-lord is considered more decisive than the house lord โ it gates the actual manifestation of events, while the house lord shows the broader flavour of the house's expression.
