Vimshottari Dasha — the master timing clock of Vedic astrology
If the birth chart is the map of your destiny, Dasha is the clock that tells you when. Vimshottari means 120 — the total years of the full Dasha cycle. The system works because each Nakshatra is ruled by a planet (the Star Lord), and that planet determines which Mahadasha you were born into and how many years remain in it. From there, the sequence of 9 planets repeats. Within each Mahadasha, the same 9 planets rotate as Antardasha lords. Within each Antardasha, they rotate again as Pratyantar lords. The three-level system — Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantar — allows timing of life events to within a few months or weeks.
How KP astrology refines Dasha prediction
Traditional Vedic astrology reads Dasha results from the planet's natural significations (Jupiter = wisdom, children, wealth) and its house placement. KP astrology adds a crucial filter: the planet's cuspal signification. A planet in KP delivers results for the houses occupied by its Star Lord and Sub-Lord, not just the house it sits in. This means a Jupiter in the 4th house does not automatically give 4th house results — it gives results for whichever houses its Star Lord signifies. This distinction is what makes KP far more precise for predicting specific events like marriage, job change, or property purchase.
What is Vimshottari Dasha? ▾
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary period system in Vedic astrology. Each of the 9 planets rules a specific period: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20 years, Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years, Mercury 17 years. Your starting Dasha is determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth.
How do I find which Dasha I am in? ▾
Your Dasha is determined by your birth Moon Nakshatra and the exact date. Enter your birth details in Astromathi's free chart calculator — your current Mahadasha, Antardasha (sub-period) and Pratyantar Dasha (sub-sub-period) are shown immediately with start and end dates.
Does Dasha predict marriage? ▾
Dasha is one of the three required conditions for marriage in KP astrology. The Dasha/Antardasha rulers must signify Houses 2, 7 and 11 in your chart. Transit confirmation and natal chart promise are the other two conditions. When all three align simultaneously, marriage is indicated. Our free Marriage prediction tool checks all three conditions for you.
What happens when Dasha changes? ▾
A Dasha change — especially a Mahadasha change — is one of the most significant turning points in life. The new Mahadasha lord's natural qualities, house placement and signification take over from the previous lord. If the new lord is stronger and signifies better houses, life improves dramatically. If it signifies challenging houses or is weak in the chart, a difficult phase begins. Planning major life decisions around Dasha changes is one of the most powerful uses of Vedic astrology.
Can two people in the same Dasha have different results? ▾
Yes — completely different results. Dasha alone does not determine outcomes. What matters is: which houses does the Dasha lord signify in YOUR specific natal chart? A Jupiter Mahadasha can give marriage for someone whose Jupiter signifies H2, H7, H11 — and health challenges for someone whose Jupiter signifies H6, H8, H12. This is why generic Dasha forecasts are misleading. KP astrology checks the house signification of each Dasha lord in your unique chart.
