What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of each lunar fortnight — twice every month. There are 24 Ekadashis in a standard year (26 in a leap year with Adhika Masa). Each has a specific name and associated deity. Fasting on Ekadashi is one of the most widely practised Hindu observances, believed to purify the mind, burn karmic impurities, and develop spiritual discipline.

Fasting Rules for Ekadashi

Traditional Ekadashi fasting: avoid all grains, lentils, and non-vegetarian food. Fruits, milk, nuts, and roots are permitted. Nirjala Ekadashi (the one in June) is the strictest — no water. Devotees wake before sunrise, worship Vishnu, read Ekadashi Mahatmya, and break the fast on Dwadashi (12th lunar day) the next morning. Even partial fasting (avoiding grains only) carries significant spiritual merit.

Frequently asked questions

24 Ekadashis in a standard lunar year — 2 per month. If there is an Adhika Masa (leap month) in 2026, there may be 26.
Which Ekadashi is the most important?
Nirjala Ekadashi (in Jyeshtha month, June) and Devshayani Ekadashi (when Vishnu enters cosmic sleep) are considered the most important. Fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi is said to give the merit of fasting on all 24 Ekadashis combined.
