The five elements of Panchanga — what each reveals

The Tithi tells you the lunar energy of the day — whether it is a building day (waxing) or a releasing day (waning), and the specific quality of the Moon-Sun relationship. The Vara (weekday) tells you which planet governs the day and what activities it favours — Sunday (Sun) for authority and health matters, Monday (Moon) for emotional and family matters, Tuesday (Mars) for courage and initiative, Wednesday (Mercury) for communication and trade, Thursday (Jupiter) for learning and spiritual matters, Friday (Venus) for relationships and creativity, Saturday (Saturn) for hard work and service. The Nakshatra gives the Moon's precise position and its qualities. The Yoga is computed from Sun + Moon longitude and indicates the overall day quality. The Karana is half a Tithi and gives finer timing resolution.

Using Panchanga for Muhurta — finding the best time to act

Muhurta (auspicious timing) combines all five Panchanga elements with the specific planetary positions at the time of an activity. The classical rule is that at least three of the five elements should be favourable for a Muhurta to be considered auspicious. For marriage, the Nakshatra is most important — certain Nakshatras are specifically designated for marriage Muhurtas. For business launch, the Vara and Tithi take precedence. For travel, Rahu Kalam avoidance is the minimum requirement. Astromathi's Muhurta calculator checks all five elements automatically and shows you the best windows for your specific event type.
