In Vedic astrology, the Sun is the Atmakaraka (soul planet) by default — it represents the individual soul's journey toward self-realisation. Its sign placement shows the style in which the native expresses core identity, seeks recognition and exercises authority. Unlike Western astrology where the Sun sign dominates personality, in Vedic astrology the Ascendant and Moon are equally or more important — but the Sun's sign gives essential information about life purpose and career direction.
☀️ The Sun's key significations: Soul, vitality, authority, father, government, medicine (as healer), ego, self-expression, career direction, bones and heart (health). The Sun is exalted in Aries (0°–10° most powerful), debilitated in Libra, and rules Leo.

The Sun and your Ascendant — the more important relationship
In KP and Vedic astrology, the Sun's house placement (measured from the Ascendant) is often more revealing than its sign placement alone. The Sun in Leo is very different depending on whether Leo is the 1st house (self-expression dominant), the 7th house (authority expressed through partnerships) or the 10th house (natural career peak). Always assess the Sun's sign, house and nakshatra together.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Vedic Sun sign the same as the Western Sun sign?
Usually not. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (corrected for the precession of the equinoxes using ayanamsa), which is approximately 23–24 degrees behind the Western tropical zodiac. Many people find their Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western Sun sign — e.g. a Western Taurus may be a Vedic Aries.
What does the Sun in a Kendra house mean?
Kendra houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — the angular houses of the chart. The Sun in a Kendra is considered very powerful, giving strong vitality, authority and career success. The Sun in the 10th house (the most powerful Kendra for career) is particularly auspicious for government work, senior management and public recognition.
What happens when the Sun is debilitated in Libra?
A debilitated Sun in Libra can be strengthened if Saturn (who rules Libra's friendly signs) is well-placed, or if Venus (Libra's lord) is strong. This is called Neecha Bhanga — cancellation of debility. Despite the theoretical debilitation, many people with Sun in Libra achieve significant authority through partnerships, law and diplomacy — the Sun expresses its power through relationships rather than solo assertion.
