Choosing the right marriage date is one of the most important astrological decisions a Hindu family makes. A Vivah Muhurat is not simply an auspicious calendar date — it is the precise confluence of Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Yoga (planetary combination) and Karana (half-day quality) that collectively create the best possible foundation for a long, harmonious marriage.

📅 How Vivah Muhurat is calculated: A date qualifies as Vivah Muhurat when the Nakshatra is auspicious (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, U.Phalguni, U.Ashadha, U.Bhadra or Revati), the Tithi is favourable (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 13th or Purnima), the weekday avoids Tuesday and Saturday, and Chaturmas and Pitru Paksha are excluded entirely.

2026 marriage season overview

2026 offers approximately 52 Vivah Muhurat dates spread across the year. The strongest seasons fall in late January through June (pre-Chaturmas) and a shorter window in late November through December. The months of July, August and September are generally avoided due to Chaturmas — the four sacred months of Vishnu's sleep — when auspicious ceremonies are traditionally suspended.

January–February 2026
Strong opening window. Makar and Kumbha solar months. Good for families who prefer winter weddings. Check for Makar Sankranti exclusion (Jan 14).
March–April 2026
The primary wedding season. Multiple strong Muhurats available in Phalguna and Chaitra months. Auspicious Akshaya Tritiya falls in this window.
May–June 2026
Last strong window before Chaturmas. Vaishakha and Jyeshtha months offer several quality dates. Preferred by South Indian families.
July–October 2026
Chaturmas and Pitru Paksha — traditionally avoided for marriages. Very limited Muhurat availability. Consult a qualified Panchanga before proceeding.
November–December 2026
Margashirsha month reopens the season. Strong Muhurats available from mid-November onwards. Popular for winter destination weddings.

What makes a Muhurat strong vs weak?

Not all Muhurats carry equal weight. The strongest marriage Muhurats in 2026 will be those where multiple pillars align simultaneously: an auspicious Nakshatra like Rohini or Hasta, a Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) Tithi, a Wednesday or Thursday Vara, and no planetary war or combustion active on that date.

Most auspicious Nakshatras for marriage
Rohini · Mrigashira · Hasta · Anuradha · U.Phalguni · U.Ashadha · U.Bhadra · Revati — these seven are considered Sthira (fixed) or highly favourable for beginning a life partnership. Rohini, presided over by Brahma himself, is the most preferred of all.
Nakshatras to avoid for marriage
Bharani · Kritika · Ardra · Ashlesha · Jyeshtha · Mula — these Nakshatras carry intense or Ugra (fierce) energy unsuitable for beginning a partnership. Gandanta Nakshatras (junction points) should also be avoided.

Personalised Muhurta — why generic dates may not suit you

A published Vivah Muhurat list gives you a calendar of generally auspicious dates. But the ideal date for your wedding depends additionally on the Lagna (ascendant) at the time of the ceremony, the compatibility of that Lagna with both partners' birth charts, and whether the Muhurta Lagna is afflicted by any malefic transit. This is why consulting an astrologer for your specific charts is strongly recommended for weddings, which are once-in-a-lifetime events.

Frequently asked questions

Is Akshaya Tritiya a good date for marriage in 2026?
Yes. Akshaya Tritiya (the third Tithi of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha) is considered so inherently auspicious that no additional Muhurta calculation is required. Any marriage begun on this day is believed to be blessed with permanent prosperity. Check the exact date for 2026 in the Panchanga.
Can we have a marriage in Shravana month 2026?
Shravana (roughly July–August) falls within Chaturmas and is traditionally avoided for most auspicious ceremonies in North India. However, certain regional traditions — particularly in parts of South India — do perform weddings in Shravana. Consult a regional Panchanga and a qualified priest.
What is the difference between Lagna Muhurta and Panchanga Muhurta?
A Panchanga Muhurta looks at the five elements of the day (Nakshatra, Tithi, Vara, Yoga, Karana). A Lagna Muhurta additionally selects the exact ascending sign at the moment of marriage and ensures it is harmonious with both partners' natal charts. Lagna Muhurta is more precise and should be used for weddings.
