Dasha & Bhukti Timing — The KP Method for Pinpointing Life Events

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology — a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that governs the unfolding of karma. This guide explains exactly how dashas work and how KP uses them to time events to within months.

The Vimshottari Dasha system is astrology's answer to the most fundamental question: when? It provides a structured timeline of planetary influences spanning 120 years, derived entirely from the Moon's position at birth. Every prediction in Vedic and KP astrology is ultimately grounded in the running dasha period.

The 120-year Vimshottari Dasha cycle

The system begins with the Moon's nakshatra at birth, which determines which planetary period you are born into and how many years remain of that period. The full sequence and duration:

Ketu Mahadasha
7 years · Past karma, spirituality, detachment, sudden changes, moksha-oriented events
Venus Mahadasha
20 years · Relationships, luxury, arts, marriage, material pleasures, beauty-related careers
Sun Mahadasha
6 years · Authority, government, father, career recognition, health, soul purpose
Moon Mahadasha
10 years · Emotions, mother, public life, travel, domestic changes, fluid circumstances
Mars Mahadasha
7 years · Energy, property, courage, siblings, accidents (if afflicted), athletic achievement
Rahu Mahadasha
18 years · Ambition, foreign matters, unconventional paths, sudden rises and reversals
Jupiter Mahadasha
16 years · Wisdom, children, education, spiritual growth, financial expansion, teaching
Saturn Mahadasha
19 years · Discipline, hard work, delays, long-term building, service, karmic lessons
Mercury Mahadasha
17 years · Communication, business, education, writing, commerce, analytical work

Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha

Within each Mahadasha (major period) are nine Antardashas (sub-periods) and within each Antardasha are nine Pratyantardashas (sub-sub-periods). Each sub-period is proportional to the main period's length. This triple-layer structure is what gives KP its event-timing precision.

How triple-dasha timing works: An event occurs when the Mahadasha lord, Antardasha lord AND Pratyantardasha lord are all significators of the relevant event houses — AND the transit confirms the timing. This triple confirmation is remarkably reliable for pinpointing events to specific months.

How to assess a dasha period in KP

1
Identify the dasha lord's natal position
Where does the dasha lord sit in your natal chart? Its house, sign and nakshatra determine which life themes it naturally activates.
2
Check the dasha lord's significator houses
Which houses does the dasha lord signify? This tells you which life areas will be activated during this period. Career periods activate H10/H2/H11 significators; marriage periods activate H7/H2/H11 significators.
3
Assess the dasha lord's strength
Is the dasha lord exalted, in its own sign, or dignified? A strong dasha lord delivers its significations generously. A weak, debilitated or combust dasha lord delivers results with difficulty, delay or unexpected twists.
4
Confirm with transit
Jupiter and Saturn transiting supportive positions confirm when within the dasha period specific events occur. Jupiter transiting the Ascendant, 5th or 9th often triggers positive events; Saturn transiting key points creates crystallisation of long-building situations.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people in the same dasha have different results?
Absolutely — and this is one of the most important points in KP astrology. The dasha period sets the planetary theme, but the natal chart determines what that planet signifies for you specifically. Two people in Jupiter Mahadasha may have very different experiences: one with Jupiter as their 5th lord (children, creativity) will see those themes; another with Jupiter as their 8th lord (transformation, inheritance) will have entirely different experiences. The natal chart is always primary.
How accurate is dasha timing for predicting events?
KP dasha timing, when applied correctly with the sub-lord theory, is remarkably accurate for event timing — typically narrowing major events to a 1–3 month window within the correct Pratyantardasha period. The accuracy depends on: birth time precision, correct ayanamsa, and correct identification of significators. Many KP practitioners achieve consistent accuracy that classical sign-based methods cannot match.
What if I was born at the beginning of a dasha period?
Your Moon's nakshatra at birth determines which dasha you were born into and how many years remain. If you were born very early in a dasha, you experience most of that full period in childhood. This is not better or worse than being born at the end of a period — the natal chart determines what that period delivers, regardless of when it starts.
